While cleaning out one of my mother’s drawers, I came across a tiny brass object that looked like a miniature spoon.
At first, I couldn’t imagine what anyone would use it for. The scoop was far too small for food, and the handle was long, thin, and decorated with small raised rings. It looked old, carefully crafted, and definitely not something from a modern kitchen.
The more I examined it, the more curious I became.
It wasn’t a toy, not part of a dollhouse set, and it didn’t seem like jewelry either. Instead, it looked like a small tool from another era—the kind of item people once kept in grooming kits, sewing boxes, or travel cases.
After asking around and doing a bit of research, I discovered that it is most likely an old ear spoon, sometimes called an ear pick.
These small tools were once commonly used for personal grooming. The tiny scoop at the tip was designed to gently remove wax from the outer part of the ear. The long handle made it easy to hold, and the curved end helped collect wax without requiring a larger instrument.
